Free Agency
The NFL Dynasty will be using a auction based free agent system to sign free agents to our NFL teams. This is done to promote fairness and give all teams a chance to sign the best free agents on the market and the free agents that can make our teams better. Described below are the different types of Free agents, who is eligible to be bid on, and how the system works, along with some examples for those that need help understanding .
Types of Free Agents
There are three types of free agents that can be bid on in the auction and during the season they are
Exclusive Rights Free agent- A player who has played less then 3 seasons in the league. More on this later
Restricted free agents- A player who has played between 3-5 seasons under there belt. Can be bid on signed by another team, but it will cost that team some form of draft pick. More on this later.
Unrestricted Free agent- A Player who has more then 5 seasons under there belt. They can be bid on and signed by a team without penalty.
*A season is defined as being on a NFL roster for more then 6 or more games each season, but since we wont be bidding on practice squad guys, no one should really have any problems with this.
Official Site
We will use only one site for free agents : www.kffl.com/static/nfl/features/freeagents/fa.php?option=QB&y=2010. This is the only official site that free agents can come from in NFL dynasty. Every year (past this year included) this list will be linked or the list will be posted in the Free Agent board on NFL Dynasty. This list must be either linked or posted in a thread on the Free Agency board at all times.
Auction Rules
Once you find an available player you want to bid on in free agency, post the players name on the FREE AGENCY BOARD (You also must state if the free agent is a Restricted Free Agent or Unrestricted Free Agent). The legal starting bid for all players is 300k. A owner will win the player once there has been no bid increases in 24 hours. The winning owner will then determine the contract length for the player between 1-5 years after the auction is over. The salary for each year of the contract is the winning bid (money amount). There will be no backloading of contracts for league contracts (too confusing and too much of a hassle). The only contracts that will be backloaded are the real life contracts at the beginning of the league. This is the way the auction system actually works. Below are rules that apply to signing the certain free agents after you won the auction, and minimum increases on bid and contract length.
Valid Increases to a Bid
$300k to $5.999M = minimum of 100k increases to bid
$6M to $11.999m = minimum of 250k increases to bid
$12+ = minimum of 500k increases to bid.
Contract minimums
Contract minimums are in place to keep team and owners from bidding a lot of money during any one season and driving there salary cap into the ground. In light of this, there are a minimum number of years a contract must be for a given amount.
$15m - $22.999m = 4 year minimum contract
$23m+ = must be a five year contract
*For anyone who wants to know the highest base salary per year is Peyton Manning at $23 million a year.
Restricted Free Agents
As stated above, Restricted free agents (RFA for short) are players that have played between 3-5 seasons in the NFL. In the NFL Dynasty you can bid on and win restricted free agents in auction, but just like real life, signing a RFA will cost you draft picks. RFA in essence are players that have only limited rights to be signed as a free agent, and their NFL team can “refuse and match their offer sheets”. In the Dynasty, RFA can be signed by any team but it will cost the “signing” team a draft pick to the “owning” team.
You would post the players name in the FREE AGENCY BOARD like normal and it will run like a normal auction and all normal auction rules will apply. If the winning owner isn't the “owning team” then he wins the player, but in addition to winning the RFA, he must giving the “owning team” a draft pick in compensation for signing the RFA. The draft pick to be given is predetermined by the winning bid amount for the RFA. The chart is shown below. EITHER THIS OR THE HOME DISCOUNT RULE OF GS2 WILL BE USED. EC WILL DECIDE.
RFA draft pick compensation Chart
Winning bid between $300k-$2.999m = No pick owed
$3m-$5.999m = 5th round draft pick owed
$6m-$8.999m = 5th round draft pick owed
$9m-$11.999m = 4th round draft pick owed
$12m-$14.999m = 3rd round draft pick owed
$15m-$17.999m = 2nd round draft pick owed
$18m- $20.999m =1st round draft pick owed
$21m-$23.999m = 1st AND 5th round draft pick owed
$24m+ = 1st AND 3rd round pick owed
All draft picks given will be for the NEXT years Draft.
Example
Lets say Tony Romo is a RFA (yes i know he isnt, just using him as an example). A team starts an auction on him, and through several days of bid increases, the Minnesota Vikings come out on top. The winning bid amount is $16.5 million. They sign Tony to a 4 year contract (contact minimum rules). Since the Vikings won the auction they must now give the Cowboys a 2011 2nd round Draft pick because Tony Romo was a RFA for the Cowboys.
Exclusive Rights Free Agents
If you recall Exclusive Rights free agents (or EFA) are free agents that have less then 3 seasons of playing time on real life teams. Usually EFA are undrafted free agents that only get one year contracts each year until they are proven for any long term deal. EFA cannot be bid on by other teams during auction. They MUST be signed by there original or “owning” team. This is because in real life, EFA must sign with the team they played for the previous season or they can not play any football. This is because they have no rights as a free agent. But dont worry these free agents dont cost much at all to sign and their contracts are only 1 year contracts. They also are almost always undrafted free agents and because of the Rookie Wage Scale in NFL Dynasty, the only EFA any team will have are undrafted free agents. (Think of this as prospect protection for those who play in NHD)
EFA can not be bid on in the auction and must be signed by their previous or “owning” team. Each EFA is signed to a 1 year contract for a mimimum salary until they become RFA after 3 years. The salary amount for the one year contract is determined by this chart for league minimum salaries (Remember each team wont have that many EFA because they are not really any out there, They usually were undrafted rookies that were signed for a very small contract, think of like undrafted back up QB’s or Kickers that went undrafted.) A recent example could be Stefon Johnson caused he went undrafted in this years draft but signed with the Titans for a very small contract. OPEN TO DEBATE

Deadlines
There are deadlines to when certain free agents can be signed and when the free agency period ends.
RFA Signing Deadline- The day when the first NFL training camp starts (TBA) will be the deadline for teams to bid on RFA in the auction. After this date, no other teams can bid on RFA and the previous or “Owning” team can sign the RFA they will use for the season to a tender contract (please see the Tender contract Thread for more info). (This is unless of course the owning team won the player back in a auction, if not they can sign the RFA that did not go through auction after this deadline and only they can sign the player). THIS RULE DOES NOT APPLY TO THE 2010 SEASON. IT WILL GO INTO EFFECT NEXT YEAR
NFL Dynasty Lockdate- This is date you must be under the cap if you arent already. The lockday will start on Midnight the day before the season officially begins. This will usually be on a Wednesday, because the opening kickoff game is always played on a Thursday. During this day no trades or Free agents signings may be made for 24 hours.
The Quarterback rule
To protect QBs which are quickly becoming the lifeblood of the NFL and because in the NFL dynasty there are 32 teams playing and 32 starting QBs, any starting QB that is signed as a free agent (RFA or UFA, doesnt matter) will owe the previous owner of the QB, a first round draft pick in the next years draft regardless of the player or who well he performed (hint:if he isnt starting then guess what you dont owe them a 1st rounder!!!). This only applies to free agent QBs. If the QB is a important second stringer (like a brady quinn, but not him exactly), you will owe them a draft pick that will be determined at the time of the signing. This is only for starters and only for free agent signings, this does not apply to trades. THIS RULE IS OPEN UP TO DEBATE FOR ALL AND WILL BE DECIDED BY EC LATER ON!![/color
