Alright, there has been a lot of questions about resigning players and if owners get a chance too and contract extensions. Under degree from the king of kings, Jamie, This is the rule that has been made.
Throughout the NFL season a bunch of potential free agents will get there contracts extended or as everyone likes to call a "long term deal". A bunch of players will also get resigned (basically a contract extension.)
If you have a potential free agent, they have to be resigned/have a contract extension by Feb 22, 2011 (This will be in all likely hood be the date for future years)
Why is it this date? Well NFL free agency starts usually 2-3 days after the Combine ends (which ends on march 1, 2011 this year) So this will give the league time to get the free agency list together and put any last second clarification for people that might have problems or concerns. But moving on to the real piece of info.
When a player is given a contract extension in real life, you can resign them to that exact contract in the NFL dynasty. You have two options :
A. You can resign that player to his new contract and start paying him his new contract numbers after the season ends. (This is attempt to make record and book keeping in the league easier, so if your player signs an extension, that will become his new contract at the end of the season.
B. If you dont want to sign him to his extension cause it is too much or for whatever reason, you must drop that player from your roster at the end of the season. You no longer own that player and he will go into free agency.
Example: Jamie owns Tom Brady, who signs a contract extension/new contract with the Patriots in Week 3 of the NFL season. The new contract is for $20 million a year for 5 years. Jamie should record theses contract numbers to use later on.
The season has ended, and before the Feb.22 deadline, Jamie has to decide to pick up Brady's new 5 year contract or release him to free agency.
REMEMBER, IF YOUR PLAYER IS A POTENTIAL FREE AGENT THEY HAVE TO HAVE A NEW CONTRACT BY FEB.22, 2011 AT MIDNIGHT, OR IF A PLAYER GOT A NEW EXTENSION, YOU MUST DECIDE IF YOU WILL RETAIN HIM AT THOSE NEW TERMS OR RELEASE HIM BY MIDNIGHT, FEB.22, 2011!!
I might keep track of contract extensions and new contracts that are announced during the season in a thread, so it will be easy for owners to remember the contract numbers, and decide to retain them or release them. I will make an announcement soon.
